Protecting Yourself from a Dog Bite Case

If your dog bites someone, no matter where it is or the circumstances surrounding the bite, you could be facing a personal injury lawsuit. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re going to have to pay out a large sum of money, but even if you win the case, you may still have a number of fees to cover, plus you may have had to take time off of work or arrange for childcare during the trial. That’s why it’s always best to protect yourself from being on the wrong end of a dog bite case. Here are some things you can do to help ensure you’re not sued for this type of personal injury.

Take Your Dog to a Training Class

The first thing you should do is make sure your dog has the training necessary to stay calm and follow your instructions. Going through a training class is a great way to help introduce your dog to other people and other animals. They will learn to listen to you, to sit and stay when told, and much more. Going through training can help deal with anxious dogs who get scared around a lot of other people or animals.

Know Your Dog’s Temperament

As a dog owner, you’re responsible for your dog’s actions. This means you’re also responsible for knowing when your dog is in a situation that may cause them to react out of fear or anger. For example, if you know your dog gets nervous or upset when around small children, don’t put your dog in that environment. If you have someone visiting who brings kids, have your dog go to its crate or stay in another room. If your dog gets anxious in the car, do everything possible to avoid taking them on car rides. Dogs that are uncomfortable are more likely to snap at someone, especially if that someone is their source of discomfort or anxiety.

Provide Warnings to Others

In addition to doing what you can to control your dog’s behavior, you also need to make certain others are warned when they do something you know your dog dislikes. If someone tries to rub your dog’s belly, for example, and you know your dog doesn’t like that, tell them so. While you shouldn’t expect everyone to cater to all of your pet’s needs, you should expect them to listen when you tell someone not to do something to your dog.
