What to Collect After a Car Accident

What Information Do You Need to Collect After a Car Accident

If you’ve been in a car accident, you likely have a personal injury case against the driver who was deemed to be at-fault in the accident. However, even if you know the person caused the accident, you may lose your case if you don’t collect the right information after the event. While being in a car accident can leave you in shock and upset, it’s important you make certain to gather the following pieces of information.

The Other Driver’s Information and Insurance

One of the first things to do is to exchange information with all of the other drivers and passengers who were involved in the accident. Get the names and contact information of everyone involved and exchange insurance information with all of the other drivers. If pedestrians were involved, be certain to get their information, too.

Take Photos

Thanks to cell phones, almost everyone has a camera on them at all times. Take as many photos as you can before the vehicles are moved or any debris is cleaned up. Get wide shots that show all or as many of the vehicles involved as you can. Take photos that include the buildings on both sides of the street to show where the accident occurred. Get close up images of the points where the cars hit. When it comes to a personal injury case, a photo is worth a thousand words.

Ask for Copies of all Reports

You want to make certain that you collect or request copies of all of the police reports and any medical report that first responders make regarding you and the accident. If emergency medical services are called, do not turn down their help. You want someone on the scene to perform a basic physical check and report anything they notice. If you develop pain later on, this report can help back up your need for compensation.
