Avoiding Injuries During the Holidays

The holidays can be a stressful time for everyone. With busy schedules, guests visiting from out of town, and decorations to put out, it is easy to be more than a little distracted during the holiday season. When we’re focused on other things, we’re more prone to accidents and injuries.

To avoid injury-causing hazards this holiday season, here are a few steps you’ll want to take.

    1. Keep the kitchen clear:
Cooking is one of the biggest parts of the holiday season, but when there are too many people in the kitchen, accidents can happen. To avoid children, animals, or lingering guests from knocking over glass dishes or burning themselves on hot appliances, minimize the number of people in the kitchen.

Those cooking should avoid wearing loose clothing and appliances should be shut off as soon as they’re done being used.

    1. Monitor candles closely:
Candles help set a cozy mood for the holidays, but they’re also a fire hazard. If you’re lighting candles in your home this winter, set them in an area that is clear of items that may catch fire and where it isn’t prone to being knocked over. Never leave your candles burning unattended.

For an even safer option, consider flameless candles.

  1. Clean up your cords:
With holiday decorations throughout the home, you probably have a few extra cords or wires around the home. These may cause slips, trips, and falls if they’re not secured or tucked away properly.Using zip ties or electrical tape, keep your cords organized and tucked out of the way – especially if you’re having guests over who may not be aware of their placement.
  2. Minimize wrapping paper messes:
When opening gifts this holiday season, things can get pretty messy – especially if you have small children around. But when gift bags and wrapping paper are left scattered on the floor, someone is bound to slip and fall.Keep a garbage bag close whenever you’re opening gifts to keep floors clear and clean.

Unfortunately, accidents can still happen. If you’re injured during the holidays, a personal injury attorney can help you get compensation you deserve to cover medical bills, lost wages, and more.
