Types of Workers’ Comp Benefits

When you’re injured on the job, you need to file for workers’ compensation. There are a number of different benefits workers’ comp provides, and you should certainly take advantage of these benefits, especially if you’ve been seriously injured. Here are some of the benefits workers’ comp provides:

Medical Costs

If you’re injured at work, workers’ comp should cover the cost of your medical bills. This includes any ER visits, hospital stays, doctor’s appointments, medications, physical therapy, tests, and even any equipment you may need such as crutches. In most cases, there is no maximum dollar amount, deductible, or other restriction on this coverage, although there may be some limits on things such as the number of visits you can make to a physical therapist. Some alternative treatments may also not be covered.

Disability

Workers’ comp covers both short-term and permanent disability. This can include partial and total disability. With partial disability, you’re still able to work but cannot do your normal job or cannot work full time. For example, if you break your arm, you may still be able to work but cannot lift anything. With total disability, you cannot work at all. If your injury is so severe that it permanently limits the work you can do, you may even receive disability benefits for the rest of your life.

Vocational Rehabilitation

If your on-the-job injury results in a permanent condition that will prevent you from doing your current job, workers’ comp will also cover the cost of vocational rehabilitation. This will help you learn new skills so you can find a new job that you are physically capable of doing. You may also receive psychological rehabilitation if you suffer from PTSD or other mental injury or trauma.

Death Benefits

If you actually die from your injuries, your spouse, your children, and any other dependents you have will receive death benefits. Workers’ comp will also cover a number of funeral costs. While you never want to think of the worst, it can be comforting to know that your loved ones will be financially secure in the event of your death.
