What to Look for in a Personal Injury Attorney

If you’ve been in an accident and are dealing with a personal injury case, you need to make certain you have the right attorney on your side. Personal injury cases can be very complicated, and without someone who is experienced and knowledgeable in this area of the law, you may not walk away with the compensation you’re due. But how do you know which personal injury attorneys are the best? Here are a few things to look for when talking to a personal injury attorney.

Do You Know What You’re Paying?

A good personal injury attorney will have very transparent pricing. You should know exactly what you’re paying for and what you’re not. For example, are you paying a set fee for your attorney, or will they take a percentage of the settlement you get? The latter is more common in personal injury cases. Make certain you know what that percentage is and whether or not you have to pay anything more, such as office fees or other costs.

They Have Credentials

Your attorney probably has a few certificates or diplomas hanging on their office walls. Don’t just glance at these—look and see when they graduated and from where. Ask how long they’ve practiced in your area. When did they last go to court for personal injuries? Do they focus on this area of the law, or is their firm open to handling all types of legal cases? A jack-of-all-trades firm may not have the expertise or deep understanding of personal injury law.

They Will Handle Your Case Themselves

Some lawyers don’t actually do anything in the courtroom. Instead, they’re more the face of the firm, serving as the marketing personality and talking to new clients. If that’s not the person who is going to be with you in the courtroom, you need to know that upfront. The lawyer you’re going to be working with should be the one you talk to from beginning to end. Otherwise, you may find that the lawyer who is actually representing you isn’t someone you like or trust.

Here at Held & Hinds, LLP, you’ll always work with the lawyer representing you in court. Our team is focused on personal injury cases, and we have decades of experience in the area. Contact us today to discuss your case.
