His lawyer, Marc J. Held of the firm Held & Hines, said the unions representing transit workers have asked the MTA to improve subway safety in part by having trains enter stations at slower speeds.
“Had the MTA followed these recommendations, Hector would be at work today instead of in a hospital bed recovering from unspeakable injuries,” Held said.
“Syracuse students went to the school infirmary due to a physical illness and found themselves locked up against their will in the mental ward of St. Joseph’s Hospital,” said Marc Held, Smith’s attorney.”

“It is heartbreaking for any parent to be informed that their child was severely hurt during a class because proper safety protocols were not followed. We hope Syracuse University will learn from this incident and ensure that no other students get hurt like Gabriel Sansone,” Held charged.
“In the previous exercise classes/practices that Sansone attended, there was never any intentional contact between any of the members of the club,” Marc Held, Sansone’s attorney, said in an email. “As such, any contact was unexpected and impermissible on campus. Mr. Sansone also never signed any waivers with the school or the club.”
